Invitation to the Geography Majors Tea (Friday 9 March 2012, 3–5pm, AS7 Seminar Rooms ABC)

As a Geography major, you are an extremely important part of our Department. Beyond the classroom, we would like to engage with you on an informal way and to get feedback from you regarding your experience at NUS. Towards this end, we are organizing a Geography Majors Tea on Friday 9 March 2011, 3-5pm, at AS7 Seminar Rooms ABC. If you happen to have a class at 2-4pm or 4-6pm, I hope the timing of the tea will allow you to join us at either at 4-5pm or 3-4pm.

Some majors have expressed concerns about changes in the curriculum and requirements for pursuing Honours. Some important announcements on these matters (eg. GE3240, timeline for Year 3 final semester, GE4101A/B, Honours Thesis, ISM) will be made at the start of the session. Then, students will get an opportunity to chat with various Geography lecturers (in a ‘rotational’ manner, so you get to meet with around 6 staff members in total). In previous years, students have told us they enjoy the chat most because it is a way to get to know their lecturers ‘up close and personal’.

Geographers' Hoodie 2012: Call for Designs

Dear Geography Majors

NUS Geog Soc will be printing Hoodie (Pullover) for all Geography Majors. We would like to invite everyone to participate in the designing of our very first Majors’ Jackets. The deadline for the submission of all designs is on the 17^th of February 2012 (Friday), 1800 hours.

Price of design: Between $25-30 (price will be confirmed once qty is finalized)

Some conditions to take note:

1) The designs should be submitted on a Hoddie Template

2) Maximum ONE Colour (e.g. Text in front- Geographers)

3) No designs will be allowed on sleeves

Voting of the designs will be from the 18^th to 25^th of February 2012. (More details on how to vote will be released at a later date)

Information on order taking will be released on week 7.

You might know already that the NUS Career Fair 2012 is now on at MPSH 1 and 2 (2 & 8 Feb 2012; 10am-5pm). There are over 176 organizations and companies represented, and 62 of them have stated explicitly that they are looking for FASS Graduates (including a mix of Public and Private sector organizations such as: CapitaLand Ltd., Changi Airport Group, Charles & Keith Group of Companies, CPIB, EDB, Fuji Xerox Singapore, HDB, Keppell Offshore & Marine, McDonald's Restaurants Pte Ltd, MediaCorp, MCYS, MFA, MINDEF, MOE, OCBC Bank, Prime Minister's Office, PSA Corporation, SearchAsia Consulting, SPH, STB, Standard Chartered Bank, Uniqlo Singapore, URA among others). CDL E-Generation Challenge 2012 - Discover your carbon shoe size!]

The CDL E-Generation Challenge - an exciting eco-themed "Amazing Race"
style national competition - will be held once again in 2012 for the
third consecutive year!

The competition will be held on Saturday, 7 April 2012 and is open to
youths between 17 and 25 years of age. The focus of this year's
competition is on Carbon Footprint. The competition is also supported by
National Environment Agency and is part of the Clean and Green Singapore
campaign.

In addition to attractive team prizes, participants representing their
schools / institutions will also contribute towards their school /
institution's chance to win the Institution Challenge, for which a
$1,000 cash donation will be made to their school / institution. All
participants will receive a goodie bag.

The competition flag-off and finish point is at CDL's City Square Mall
(CSM), Singapore's first eco-mall.

Each year, many Geography majors wonder what career paths are open to them! The Geography Career Talk provides you with some precious insights into the ‘tracks and pathways’ undertaken by young and successful alumni.
We are pleased to welcome all majors to attend the Geography Career Talk 2012 on Wednesday 22 February 2012 4-6pm, LT11 (note that this is during the one-week vacation break). Four alumni will be talking about “how Geography was useful in their job search” and “how geography continues to be relevant in their everyday work”. We are still confirming our alumni speakers right now, but the possible organizations they come from include:

·         Housing and Development Board
·         Nokia (Location and Commerce) [Formerly “NAFTEQ”]
·         Ernst and Young

New e-learning module on Oral Presentation Skills for students

Dear all,

We are writing to share with you about our new e-learning module on Oral Presentation Skills for students (http://emodule.nus.edu.sg/presentation-skills/part1/). This pilot e-module, "Preparing for Successful Oral Presentations", is the first of a 4-part series, developed by CDTL in collaboration with CELC and is aimed at providing a self-assessed e-learning module for students to learn useful techniques and strategies in Oral Presentations.

The following learning activities are included in the e-module:

- A structured and organized module that promotes self-directed learning and allows students to learn at their own pace and convenience;

- Videos of the workshop delivered by the Module Speaker, Mr Patrick Gallo, Associate Director/CELC;

- Self-tests or exercises to encourage students to reflect and practise the learning points;

- A feedback mechanism that allows students to direct any question about oral presentations to the Module Speaker; and

- Summary notes and resources such as presentation slides, answers to self-tests and links to other related oral presentation skills videos.

Please share about this e-module with your students or interested colleagues.

Overseas Field Trip: Hanoi, Vietnam

For the first time in 3 years, an Overseas Field Trip was organized by the NUS Geographical Society.

Planning for the trip was spearheaded by the Majors' Welfare Cell, namely Flora Toh, Tan Shuming and Cheryl Siah.

Hanoi, Vietnam, was the destination of choice as it is a location that is not only close to Singapore, but also has the perfect blend of Human and Physical Geography learning opportunities. 18 students and one professor. Six days and five nights of learning, fun and discovery.

The highlights of the trip were the breathtaking overnight cruise in Halong Bay, strolling around freely on the bustling streets of Hanoi, learning to navigate and weave through the traffic as the locals do, observing the urban streetscapes of Hanoi, learning about Microfinance through Bloom Microventures, as well as the museum visits throughout the trip.

Reflections by some of the participants:

Leong Munkidd: AWESOME! Never thought an overseas trip with schoolmates could be so fun! GEOGRAPHY ROCKS! Dr. Gillen made things easier with his knowledge of Vietnamese too!

Shaun Nah: I feel that the trip fulfilled dual purposes; as an educational experience as well as a relaxing post-exam getaway.

Leon Gaw: Sometimes when I bargain and it really doesn't go my way, I like to take a step back to look at the big picture where those few thousand dongs reduced translates to savings of only one or two dollars. And for people who live on very little a day, what meager savings we achieve for bragging rights means alot to the Vietnamese, like a meal at the table. Thanks for the very eye-opening trip to Hanoi that went without a hitch!

The Society would like to say a huge thank you to all trip participants who made the trip such a success, with special mention to Professor Gillen for generously sharing his knowledge on Vietnam and his guidance, together with our guides from Come & Go VIetnam as well as the passionate people behind Bloom Microventures.

We hope that more majors would be able to join us on future trips, and once again, here's a sincere thank you and shout-out to everyone for their support.

'The Land Transport Authority's plan to open a major road through Bukit Brown Cemetery which is of eco-heritage value has raised debates between conservationists and developmentalists. One sees the more intangible but longer term cultivation of a collective sense of identity and belonging as well as the importance of protecting the undeveloped environment; the other, the short-term but lucrative demands for growth and prosperity' (Liew Kai Kun, 2011)

Join us this December as we explore Bukit Brown Cemetery, experience the eco-heritage of Bukit Brown and simultaneously discuss this 'nature' versus society debate imbued with politics and power.

Interested in sharing your enthusiasm about a particular aspect of Geography?
Have something particularly geographical to say?

The NUS Geographical Society’s Geosphere team may just be what you’re interested in.

Geosphere is NUS Geographical Society's annual publication that aspires to inform and inspire the Society’s members as well as Geography teachers and students in junior colleges and secondary schools. It is distributed during Geography Challenge as well as through the Society's various events.

Our theme this year is “Geography, aLIVE!”. We adore Geography and have seen how the subject is not just alive in textbook diagrams but is actually very alive in our daily social interactions with the environment and people. We hope to change people’s perception that Geography is very grounded and unpractical. At the same time, we want to provide a platform for Geography majors to share their experiences on relating Geography in their everyday lives.

We are looking for people who want to contribute articles of various types. These may take the form of photo articles, interviews, research articles and even graphics.
If you fit our bill, please email us your article/contribution ideas at geogsoc.publications@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible. If you are interested to write, but unsure of how you can contribute, please let us know too by telling us your areas of interests.

The Geography Career Talk welcomes all majors to attend the event on Wednesday 23 February 2011, 4pm - 6pm at LT11. This is during the one-week vacation break. Four alumni will be talking about “how Geography was useful in their job search” and “how geography continues to be relevant in their everyday work”.

There is no need to register for this event, just come and bring along your friends (non-GE majors also welcome of course)! Meal is provided at 6pm outside LT11.

The booth will be opened from 10-6pm.

Payment must have been made upon collection of shirt. (You can make payment on the spot.) We are again, very sorry for the delay, we had problems with the shirts supplier. Do try and collect them between these two days as after this week, we will not be setting a booth as school would close for recess week and most students would not be in school.

Ever heard of NUS Geography Challenge 2010? This event brings together more than 300 secondary students from about 80 different schools to pit their wits against one another in their Geographical knowledge!

YOU can be part of this exciting event.

Details of Event:

Thank you for those who came to help out with Preliminary Rounds! Your help was crucial to make it a smooth and successful event.

Those who could not make it for the Prelims, but would like to help out, here's one more event that's coming up -- Geotrail and Grand Finals!

Station Masters/Ushers needed

Geo-Trail and Finals - 3rd April 2010, Saturday, 8am - 3pm

The Geo-Trail competition is an island-wide contest, which involves teams embarking on a trail of adventure to various parts of Singapore. Teams will set off from Ministry of Water, Environment and Resources Auditorium this year and must return to the end point (NUS) after visiting various stations at meaningful locations in Singapore. To clear each station, participants will need to apply geographical concepts and map interpretation skills. The teams will also be observing sustainable spaces in Singapore and are required to resolve questions independently and critically.

We will be needing Station Masters to be stationed at the various locations around Singapore to facilitate the completion of tasks by the schools that report there. This is when we will need you to commit to:

- Attend a pre-Dry Run briefing on the 26/03/10 Friday [TBC if necessary]
- Attend GeoTrail Dry Run on 27/03/10 morning [approx 0800 - 1700]
- Attend a preparation meeting on either 01/04/10 [before/after technical run at MEWR auditorium] or 02/04/10 (Good Friday)
- Be there on the actual day 03/04/10 [approx 0800 - 1600]

CCA points will be allocated. But it's not all about points, it's about the friendships forged and the memories you'll get out of participating in NUS GC!

1. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who took part in our survey for the Geog Major's Identity, we're very happy with the enthusiastic response! We will be organising a Design Competition for ALL Geog Majors to submit their designs starting Monday 1 February and ending Friday 12 February.

Based on Survey Feedback:

The design should be suited for a white AND black background- Attached to the email is a sample template, the design should be appropriate for a Round Neck Tshirt
Please refrain from having any sleeve designs and minimal designs on the back of the shirt-The design should include something that represents the Geography Department and Majors e.g. "NUS GEOG" or even " GEOGRAPHERS AT NUS" (or other similar tag phrases)
Please refrain from any profanities and images which may be deemed offensive or disturbingThe content of the design must be original and must not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks and other intellectual property laws.

WeSearch! is an independent youth research initiative that aims to connect undergraduates in NUS interested in practical, action-oriented community research with civil society organizations requiring research for education and advocacy efforts. WeSearch! is motivated by the desire to provide an open platform for students in NUS and beyond to engage in meaningful and practical research, providing them the opportunity to hone their research skills, gain a better appreciation of the scope of applied social research, and encourage direct involvement in the local community.

Our theme for 2010 “Social Action Across Divides”, with a focus on forms of social action and community service that bridge the real and artificial divides between different demographic and social groups in Singapore. Civil society groups we're working with this year include: AWARE (women's issues), com.passion.sg (poverty and inequality), H.O.M.E and TWC2 (migrants' issues), Migrant Voices (oral history), The Online Citizen (local issues), Project X (sex work) and Think Centre (human rights and civil society).

Browse through the “Research Wanted” list, or our list of research partners, to get a sense of what community research is required. Think critically about the research questions at hand. Ask: Given this civil society organization’s mission and objectives, why are they interested in finding out about this. Does this research support one of their core programmes? Are they hoping to put together an awareness brochure or advocacy paper?
After you’ve chosen a research issue you’re interested in, send an email to the contact person listed for more details as well as to determine the scope and scale of the research. You could conduct research in conjunction with an academic module, or independently as a volunteer. There is absolutely no commitment at this stage.

Oh yes we spent the last saturday of January 2010 at the Central Fire Station! :)

We really wanted to slide down the pole! but it wasn't allowed because its very unsafe. So the firemen slid down one by one, haha that is the last guy who just landed.

yeaaa happy right :) but imagine lugging 12 kg, up and down the stairs for training.. Not easy lah.

The fire hose! It has water pressure up to a level of 10, but for now, we tried it at a level of 3.

This exhibition depicts Singapore as seen through cartographers, geologists, mariners, military generals and town planners. Beginning with the arrival of the British and merchants from the nascent East India Company, to military strategists of Imperial Japan and postwar city planners, "Vignettes in Time" provides snippets of little-known histories. Displayed for the first time are many maps from the collections fo the National Library Singapore and Mr Lim Shao Bin. With over 130 maps on display, this is the single largest showcase of maps in Singapore. Come explore a little-known Singapore through vignettes of the past. This exhibition is curated by Mr Lim Chen Sian. "Vignettes in Time" is jointly organised by National Library Singapore and the Singapore Heritage Society.

Geography Challenge

The next Geography Challenge is expected to take place from 20 February 2010.

Registration opens late January 2010, so expect the invitation to your school soon!

The NUS Geographical Society is a non-profit organisation dedicated to serving the needs, welfare and aspirations of students of Geography in NUS; in maintaining a strong and close relationship between the student community and faculty at the Department of Geography; and in promoting the discipline of Geography amongst the Singaporean student community. The Society enjoys a long history and tradition of close ties with the Department, extending back to the days of the former University of Singapore. Today, the Geog Soc (pronounced “JEOG-SOCK”), as it is affectionately referred to, still serves as the umbrella body under which students reading Geography can find both academic and social support. This is achieved through the numerous activities organised throughout the year.

THE SOCIETY’S LOGO

The logo captures the dynamism and vibrancy of the Society. The sunflower is used as a metonym for the environment, reflecting the essence of geography. The striking stylised image of the sunflower also captures the spirit of geographic concern with human-environment relationships. The outreaching petals of the flower are representative of students’ quest for greater knowledge as well as the Society’s bid to reach out to all students.
